21A – Reading Reflection No. 2
The Art of Social Media -
What was the general theme or argument of the book?
Guy Kawasaki teams up with Peg Fitzpatrick to take us on a journey through best social media practices in blogging, tweeting, Facebooking, Tumbling, and more, or simply put, "the one essential guide you need to get the most bang for your time, effort, and money." The theory is that successfully using social media to your advantage for your business will help you succeed in the long run. Social media is a prominent factor in promoting and serving your business needs.
How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
Being that this course emphasizes the importance of planning, creating pitches, and innovating your way to success through interviews, connections, and feedback, this book adds to the mix by explaining how to properly set up your business and use social media tools to your advantage. So this book is an additional factor that will contribute toward your entrepreneurial successes down the road.
If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
I would make the book a must-read and ask the class to implement these tactics through social media messaging exercises that will help us connect to other entrepreneurs as opposed to conducting interviews. This would also help us improve our writing skills and discuss new ways to communicate our product through these platforms.
What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
The biggest thing is this isn't a book that isn't much for beginners in the social media realm, you must have some experience already, however, being that most of the students in this course understand the importance of social media, we will be able to follow along just fine. Also, a proposed idea is to not always post your own social content. You will be just as effective by using other people's content as well (retweeting, reposting, etc.).
